Oil on Hallah
oil on hallah
This series spreads memories, hauntings, nightmares on toast. Since 2003, I have developed a painting practice on hallah bread (a ritual bread in Jewish cuisine). It is my way of working with personal or collective, often difficult memories and images. When I first started making these, I was hoping to document their disintegration, but these “memory pieces” prove surprisingly durable. Sneaky memories- from ancestral knowing, through overwhelming night jobs that made daydreaming possible, to nightmares real and imagined; oil on hallah is my way of transforming all that is keeping me up at night into decaying edible matter.
